Speculation is mounting over who could step into the lead role in Midsomer Murders should Neil Dudgeon decide to depart from the long-running ITV crime drama. 

While the actor has not announced any immediate plans to leave, he recently hinted at the inevitability of being replaced in the future.

In a candid interview, Dudgeon, who portrays DCI John Barnaby, acknowledged that his tenure on the show will eventually come to an end. 

Speaking to Radio Times, he shared: “I’m very happy in the countryside, it’s very nice. And no, I assume that at some point, I’ll get the hook.” 

Until that day comes, however, he intends to continue portraying the much-loved detective.

Despite no confirmed departure, bookmakers have begun speculating on who might be next in line to take on the role. 

Among the notable names mentioned is Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver, raising the question of whether Midsomer Murders could soon introduce its first female lead detective.

Sue Cleaver: A Strong Contender?

Sue Cleaver, widely recognized for her portrayal of Eileen Grimshaw in Coronation Street, recently announced her departure from the soap after 25 years. This has fueled rumors that she could transition into the world of crime-solving drama. With odds set at 10/1, Cleaver is among the potential replacements for Dudgeon should he decide to step away from the role.

In a recent interview, Cleaver opened up about her decision to leave Coronation Street, revealing that her exit had been in the works since 2022. While appearing on Loose Women, she stated: “I have decided after 25 wonderful years that it is time to hang Eileen back up in the prop cupboard. I’ve decided it’s time to leave, they’re keeping the door firmly open for me. It’s just the right time!”

Her departure aligns with speculation that Midsomer Murders might be looking to introduce a fresh dynamic, and her wealth of acting experience makes her a strong candidate.

Other Possible Replacements for Neil Dudgeon
