General Hospital’ star Kristen Vaganos opens up about replacing Molly and Facing Sonny: ‘I even received a threatening letter…’

Kristen Vaganos, the actress who stepped into the role of Molly Lansing-Davis on General Hospital in 2023, has been busy leaving her mark on the iconic character.

After several recastings, Vaganos’ portrayal of Molly has given fans a fresh perspective on the character, and she’s embraced the opportunity to make Molly her own.

From the drama surrounding her personal life to her shifting dynamics within her family, Vaganos is quickly becoming a central figure on the soap.

However, she’s not just acting; she’s also busy behind the scenes, producing and starring in projects like the dramedy Ramona at Midlife.

Here’s an exclusive look into her journey with General Hospital and beyond.

The Tumultuous Recast: Kristen Vaganos Steps into Molly’s Shoes

When Vaganos took over the role of Molly Lansing-Davis, she knew it would be a challenge. The character had been portrayed by Haley Pullos for years, and replacing a fan-favorite like Pullos wasn’t easy. Vaganos, however, was determined to be part of the solution. “It was so tumultuous,” she recalls of the recasting process. “It seemed like there was a new recast every week, so I wanted to come in and be a solution.” Fortunately for both Vaganos and the General Hospital audience, she managed to do just that. Fans have warmly embraced her portrayal of Molly, and Vaganos appreciates the support she’s received, recognizing that she’s playing in “their playground.”

In the beginning, Vaganos was thrown into the deep end, working alongside co-stars like Tajh Bellow (T.J.), Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis), and Kate Mansi (Kristina). “It was crazy to jump in, but I’m grateful for it,” she admits. This experience helped her quickly get a grasp on the dynamics of the Davis family and develop her own spin on Molly’s character.

Molly Gets a New Edge: Vaganos Brings Snark and Humor to the Role

Since joining General Hospital, Vaganos has given Molly a distinct, snarky edge. While the character has always been a fighter, Vaganos has injected a level of humor and confidence into Molly that fans are responding to. “I love when heavy drama and comedy come together,” Vaganos explains. “That’s the most fun, which is why I’ve made Molly so snarky.” Molly’s new attitude reflects her growth into a strong, no-nonsense woman who is unafraid to stand up for herself, even if it means stepping on a few toes along the way.

Vaganos particularly enjoyed a memorable scene where Molly confronted Maurice Benard’s Sonny Corinthos, calling him out for his violent past and poor parenting. “I was so scared, going up against the heavy hitter,” Vaganos shares. However, the scene was written in a way that allowed Molly to get the upper hand, which made it all the more thrilling for the actress. “It was kind of awesome,” she laughs. While she’s not opposed to the idea of future confrontations with Sonny, this particular moment marked an exciting turning point for Molly.

The Drama with Kristina and the Davis Family Dynamic

One of the most intriguing relationships for Vaganos’ Molly is with her half-sister Kristina, played by Kate Mansi. The two have had their share of tension, especially as Kristina’s surrogacy storyline unfolded. “It’s been really fun to work with Kate,” Vaganos says. The two actresses share a genuine sisterly bond, which translates onto the screen. “We quickly developed a true sister relationship, where we’re yelling at each other in the green room and being silly.” Despite their on-screen conflicts, their real-life camaraderie makes their dramatic moments all the more impactful.

For Vaganos, playing Molly alongside the talented women in the Davis family has been an empowering experience. “It’s such a sweet, crazy, female empowerment dynamic,” she gushes. From working with Nancy Lee Grahn to getting to know Kelly Monaco (Sam), Vaganos feels right at home within the close-knit family unit.

Molly and T.J.: Navigating Life After Love

Since Vaganos took over the role of Molly, her character has been through a whirlwind of emotions. Not only did she lose two surrogate pregnancies, but she’s also dealt with the murder of her sister Sam and a breakup with T.J., her longtime partner. “It’s crazy… but how interesting is it going to be to see these two characters who’ve been together forever have to navigate not having each other?” Vaganos reflects. For Molly and T.J., life without one another presents a new chapter filled with uncertainty. Fans will be eager to see how this relationship develops, as both characters are now forced to experience adult life outside of their long-standing partnership.

Molly and Cody: Chemistry Testing in Port Charles?

While Molly’s future with T.J. is uncertain, General Hospital has been exploring her chemistry with new potential love interests. Cody, portrayed by Josh Kelly, is one of the characters fans are speculating could become involved with Molly. “There’s definitely an exploration going on there,” Vaganos teases. While their personalities are polar opposites—Molly is high-strung and tightly wound, while Cody is carefree and reckless—there’s an undeniable intrigue between the two. “There’s something innately interesting in that,” Vaganos says, hinting that viewers will be seeing more of this dynamic in the future.

Kristen Vaganos: From GH to Film Production

When Vaganos isn’t tackling emotional storylines on General Hospital, she’s making her mark in the world of film production. Her latest project, Ramona at Midlife, a dramatic comedy about a woman navigating life in her 40s, has just premiered on streaming platforms. The film explores themes of reinvention and personal growth, something Vaganos can relate to both as an actress and a producer. “I’m excited about being able to champion and executive produce projects I feel passionate about,” she says, reflecting on her future in the industry.

As for General Hospital, Vaganos is thrilled to see what’s next for Molly. “I’m excited to see what Molly’s next chapter looks like,” she concludes. With plenty of drama, comedy, and new relationships ahead, fans can expect to see much more of Molly Lansing-Davis—and Kristen Vaganos—on their screens in the future.
