What happened next changed the course of her career. “As she was walking out, I opened the door and said, ‘Vanessa.’ It was her time. She turned and saw me, and she said she knew in that moment she was going to get the job. But if I had been a minute later, she wouldn’t have auditioned for the role.”

When Marcil finally stepped into the audition room, she proved Teschner’s instincts correct. Despite being a “raw, green actress,” her performance left an indelible impression. “When she started doing the audition, there was so much going on. I thought, ‘There’s some magic here,’” Teschner said.

Shortly after landing the role, she starred in Prince’s iconic music video for “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World,” further cementing her place as a stunning and talented actress. “The most beautiful girl in the world thought she wasn’t pretty enough and almost left an audition,” Teschner said, underscoring the self-doubt that can plague even the most extraordinary performers.

Teschner sees Marcil’s experience as a valuable lesson for all actors. “I always tell actors, it’s not about anybody else in the room. You’re auditioning because the role has not been cast,” he explained. “So you have as great a shot as anyone in that room, whether you recognize them from the work they’ve done or not. Everybody has an opportunity, or we wouldn’t hold an audition.”
