Zoe Tate: A Groundbreaking Character

Zoe Tate, played by Leah Bracknell, was Frank and Jean’s only daughter and another unforgettable figure in Emmerdale. Zoe’s character made history in 1993 when she became the first lesbian character on a British soap opera. Her groundbreaking storyline helped to normalize LGBTQ+ representation in mainstream media.

Her exit from the show in 2006 was a poignant moment, earning Leah Bracknell the British Soap Award for Best Exit. Tragically, Leah was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 2016, and despite receiving charitable donations for treatment, she passed away in 2019 at the age of 55.
