From the moment Cody Bell parachuted into the Metro Court pool, his journey in General Hospital has been rocky at best. 

While the writers have tried to give him a solid place in Port Charles, he has struggled to fit into the existing canvas. 

As time passes, it’s becoming clear that Cody’s character might not be working out the way the show intended. Could it be time for GH to cut ties with him and move on?

A Character Without a Clear Purpose

Cody (Josh Kelly) was introduced as a grifter with a troubled past, a charming bad boy looking to cash in on a fortune. 

He deceived people, gambled, and even lied about his paternity in an attempt to get his hands on some money. 

Despite these early flaws, there was potential for character growth. However, the show never fully capitalized on that.

One of Cody’s first major storylines involved a potential connection with Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud), but that romance never fully took off. The show also teased a mysterious backstory between Cody and his childhood friend Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna), hinting at a dark secret from their past. Unfortunately, that plotline fizzled out without any meaningful development.

When the truth about his real father, Mac Scorpio (John J. York), was revealed, it should have been a defining moment for Cody. He had a chance to be part of one of Port Charles’ most beloved legacy families, but instead of integrating him further, the writers seemed unsure of where to take his story next. His strongest relationship is arguably with a child—his best friend is seven-year-old James (Gary James Fuller), which speaks volumes about his lack of meaningful adult connections.

Failed Romantic Prospects

The writers briefly gave Cody a chance at redemption when he became a hero and saved Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) from a dangerous situation. It seemed like GH was setting them up for an epic love story—until the shocking revelation that they are cousins. That revelation took away one of Cody’s most promising relationships and left him once again struggling to find a place in Port Charles.

Now, the show appears to be hinting at a potential pairing with Molly Lansing-Davis (Kristen Vaganos), but there is little chemistry or logic behind this match. They don’t have a strong foundation, and forcing them together seems like yet another attempt to salvage a character who just isn’t working.

Making Matters Worse

As if Cody’s lack of direction wasn’t enough, his recent behavior has made him even more difficult to root for. While his heartbreak over losing Sasha is understandable, he’s been handling it in the worst way possible—by lashing out at everyone around him.

He picked a fight with Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison), which wasn’t entirely unexpected given Drew’s own personality, but things escalated further when Cody went after Damian Spinelli (Bradford Anderson). Picking a fight with Spinelli—a fan-favorite character beloved by most of Port Charles—is a surefire way to make audiences turn against him.

But perhaps Cody’s most damaging mistake is spreading the false claim that Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) is the father of Sasha’s unborn child. Not only is this completely untrue, but it’s also a reckless and cruel move that only hurts Sasha—the very woman he claims to care about. His actions are making him more of a nuisance than a compelling character, and at this point, it’s hard to see how he can bounce back.

Is It Time for Cody to Go?

There’s no denying that Josh Kelly is a talented actor, but Cody Bell may not be the right role for him. If General Hospital can’t find a meaningful way to incorporate Cody into the ongoing storylines, maybe it’s time to write him out.

The show could opt to kill him off in dramatic fashion or send him away in a more open-ended exit that leaves the door open for a future return. Another option? Have Josh Kelly return as a completely new character—similar to how GH has done in the past with actors like Roger Howarth.

At the end of the day, Cody simply doesn’t seem to fit in Port Charles, and forcing him into storylines that don’t feel natural isn’t doing the show any favors. Perhaps it’s time to let him go and make room for characters who truly add something to General Hospital’s rich legacy.
