Charlie Lawson, widely recognized for his portrayal of Jim McDonald on ITV’s *Coronation Street*, 

recently opened up about his current financial difficulties, revealing that he is struggling to cover basic living expenses, including heating costs. 

The actor shared candid details of his hardships during an appearance on *The Nolan Show*, 

where he addressed the broader challenges of his personal life and career in the face of a turbulent year.

The 64-year-old actor admitted that 2024 had been one of the most difficult years in his 44-year-long career, citing fewer acting opportunities and financial strain as primary factors. 

Lawson explained that the rising costs of living, particularly the soaring energy prices, had made it difficult for him to afford heating in his home. 

“This year, the heat will not be on all the time,” he said, describing how he now wears outdoor clothing indoors to stay warm during the winter months. He reflected on how different things were just a year ago when the heating was on throughout the cold season, emphasizing the harsh contrast brought on by the financial strain they are facing.

In addition to his acting career challenges, Lawson’s personal finances were further affected when his wife, Debbie, had to shut down her Cheshire-based farm shop. This decision led to a mounting debt of nearly £50,000, creating additional pressure on the couple. However, Lawson remains optimistic and practical about their situation. While their incomes are modest, he stated that he and his wife are better off than many others in the same boat, highlighting that they have a stable income from his work with GB News and Debbie’s role managing a women’s refuge. Still, Lawson acknowledged that they have made significant lifestyle changes, such as forgoing international vacations and dining out at expensive restaurants.

The actor was particularly transparent about how he manages his finances. He explained that, while they get by with two incomes, life has become more budget-conscious. “We haven’t been abroad this year. We don’t eat in The Ivy when we go back to Belfast. You cut your cloth,” he added. He also mentioned how he is fortunate to live near a local pub, where he can walk to instead of paying for a taxi, which has helped them save money.

Alongside these personal struggles, Lawson reflected on his career, which has been significantly impacted by his outspoken political views, especially his controversial stance on transgender issues. He suggested that these views may have contributed to a lack of job offers, speculating that the entertainment industry is less welcoming to individuals with political opinions that diverge from the mainstream. “People in my industry won’t admit this, but it is about your beliefs, your standards and what you speak about on social media, that all has an effect,” he said, acknowledging the difficulty of finding work due to his views.

Lawson’s financial woes also extend to his predictions about the future of the television industry. During his interview, he expressed doubts about the long-term viability of *Coronation Street*, suggesting that the show, along with other long-running soaps like *EastEnders* and *Emmerdale*, may not survive for much longer due to the changing landscape of television. He pointed out that viewers no longer tune in to these shows as they did in the past, with fewer people watching live and ratings steadily declining. “I don’t think *Corrie* will be around in 10 years. I don’t think it will have its 94th birthday,” Lawson ominously predicted.

Reflecting on the changing nature of television and the decreasing revenue from advertising, Lawson highlighted the significant shift in audience habits, which no longer draw the millions of viewers they once did. He also criticized the pay disparity between UK actors and their counterparts in other countries, sharing his own experiences working internationally, where pay is often double what it is in the UK. 

Despite the many challenges he is facing, Lawson remains pragmatic and thankful for the support of his wife and their combined efforts to stay afloat during a difficult time. He may not be as prominent in the public eye as he once was, but his honest reflection on both his personal and professional struggles offers a rare glimpse into the life of a former soap star coping with the realities of an ever-changing entertainment industry and an increasingly difficult economic climate.
