Actress Louisa Lytton has opened up about the emotional departure of co-star James Bye from EastEnders with a cryptic three-word message!

The 40th-anniversary celebrations of EastEnders have been nothing short of dramatic,

culminating in a tragic and emotional storyline that saw Martin Fowler, played by James Bye,

meet his untimely demise.

The character’s shocking exit has left fans heartbroken, and his co-stars have since taken to social media to share their thoughts and memories of working with him.

Among them is Louisa Lytton, who plays Ruby Allen, Martin’s current love interest on the show.

Louisa Lytton Pays Tribute

Following the airing of the explosive anniversary episode, Louisa took to her Instagram Story to express her sadness over James’ departure.

She shared a poignant behind-the-scenes photo of herself hugging James inside the set of the Queen Vic, which was left in ruins after the devastating explosion. Alongside the heartfelt image, she simply wrote: “No words really”—a short but powerful tribute, accompanied by a broken heart emoji.

Having worked together since 2018, Louisa and James built a strong on-screen dynamic, particularly after Ruby’s return to Albert Square. With their characters intertwined in a complicated love story, Martin’s exit will undoubtedly leave a significant void in Ruby’s storyline moving forward.

Martin’s Final Moments

Viewers were left on the edge of their seats as the live episode depicted Martin and several others trapped inside the Queen Vic following the explosion. In an act of heroism, Martin helped his loved ones escape, ensuring Ruby made it to safety. However, his determination to rescue his ex-wife Stacey Slater proved to be his undoing.

As Martin and Stacey made their way towards the exit, a metal beam collapsed, pinning him to the ground and crushing his legs. Despite his struggle to stay conscious, he and Stacey shared a deeply emotional moment, professing their love for each other. In a bittersweet twist, Martin even proposed, making a last-ditch effort to secure their future together.

Unfortunately, the rescue came too late. Paramedics warned that lifting the beam could send a fatal surge of toxins through his body, a condition known as crush syndrome. As the firefighters carefully removed the debris, Martin succumbed to his injuries, leaving Stacey devastated.

The episode concluded in gut-wrenching fashion, with Stacey cradling Martin’s lifeless body, her screams of anguish piercing through the silence of the Square. Outside the Queen Vic, Ruby—who also shares a child with Martin—fell to her knees in despair, confirming the devastating reality of his passing.

James Bye’s Farewell to EastEnders

James Bye, who has portrayed Martin Fowler since 2014, bid farewell to the soap in an emotional statement following his final episode.

“Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders—and on the night of the show’s epic 40th anniversary—the time felt right,” James shared. “It’s an honor to leave on a story of this magnitude. A huge thank you to all the fans of the show—EastEnders wouldn’t be what it is without you—and to the BBC and EastEnders team for trusting me with this role for so many years. This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler.”

His heartfelt goodbye resonated with fans, many of whom flooded social media with tributes and messages of appreciation for his decade-long tenure as one of Walford’s most beloved characters.

A Legacy That Lives On

Martin Fowler’s departure marks the end of an era for EastEnders, but his legacy as a devoted father, friend, and husband will remain in the hearts of viewers. His tragic exit will have lasting repercussions on the residents of Albert Square, particularly Stacey and Ruby, whose lives are now forever changed by his loss.

As EastEnders continues its journey beyond its 40th anniversary, fans can expect more drama, heartbreak, and unforgettable moments. One thing is certain—James Bye’s portrayal of Martin Fowler will be remembered as one of the most impactful in the show’s history.
