Former EastEnders star Cheryl Fergison has revealed how the cast of the hit BBC soap comes to understand what it means to be axed: “If just one person refuses to meet the boss’s demands, the rest are all under threat…”

Cheryl Ferguson, who portrayed the beloved character Heather Trott on EastEnders,

has opened up about the difficult moment she realized her character would be written out of the iconic soap.

Heather Trott, the best friend of Shirley Carter and a huge George Michael fan, was a much-loved character who was part of EastEnders from 2007 until her tragic death in 2012.

In a recent interview, Cheryl reflected on the signs she saw leading up to her departure, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look into the tough decisions made by the producers.

Heather was initially introduced as a guest character, but her infectious personality quickly won over viewers, making her a key fixture in the soap.

She had a son, George, named after her idol George Michael, and shared a strong bond with her best friend Shirley, played by Linda Henry.

However, Heather’s time in Walford was cut short when she was brutally murdered by Ben Mitchell, a plot that shocked fans and left many still upset over her exit.

Cheryl Ferguson’s Early Warning Signs

In a candid conversation with The Daily Star, Cheryl admitted that she had a feeling her character’s time was coming to an end. “I had a feeling it might be coming,” she said, reflecting on the period leading up to Heather’s exit. Cheryl revealed that actors would regularly meet with producers to discuss upcoming storylines. The meetings were typically a chance to learn about what was in store for their characters, but it wasn’t always a good sign when the meetings stopped.

“We’d always joke that either you’re going up to talk about your storyline, or you’re part of the culling,” Cheryl explained. However, one particular week stood out. “That week, as Friday approached, I hadn’t had a meeting, and neither had Linda [Henry, who played Shirley Carter],” she recalled. Cheryl’s instincts told her something was amiss, and she was right.

The Heartbreaking News

Cheryl described the moment when the producer, Brian Kirkwood, informed her about Heather’s fate. She could immediately tell that it wasn’t going to be a good conversation. “I walked in, and he looked visibly upset,” she recalled. “I had an inkling of what was coming.” Sitting down with Cheryl, Brian delivered the heartbreaking news that Heather would be written out of the show.

“He explained that the higher-ups—the Powers That Be—had decided they wanted to explore Shirley dealing with grief, which meant Heather was going to die,” Cheryl revealed. It was a shocking turn of events, especially since Heather was such a prominent character at the time. Cheryl’s portrayal of the vulnerable yet endearing Heather had made her a fan favourite, and the news left her devastated.

The Emotional Departure of Heather Trott

Heather’s death on EastEnders was a defining moment for the soap, and her exit was met with an outpouring of grief from fans. Her murder by Ben Mitchell was a brutal and shocking storyline, and it highlighted the tragic nature of the show. Cheryl’s portrayal of Heather made her death all the more poignant, as fans had grown attached to her character over the years.

For Cheryl, leaving the show was an emotional experience. “It was bittersweet,” she said of her time on EastEnders. “I was sad to see Heather go, but I also understood that it was time for the character to leave.” Heather’s death marked the end of an era for the character, but it also set the stage for Shirley’s grief-stricken journey in the aftermath. The storyline would have a lasting impact on the entire family and the rest of Walford.

Even after her exit, Heather Trott remains an iconic character in EastEnders history. Her tragic death, her friendship with Shirley, and her devotion to her son George have made her a character fans continue to remember fondly.
