Sarah Sugden (played by Katie Hill) has been through an incredibly tough time recently in 

Emmerdale, but it looks like there might finally be a glimmer of happiness on the horizon for her — though not in a way that puts her grandmother, Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), at ease. As Sarah tries to pick up the pieces of her life, a new face in the village might offer 

her the excitement she craves, but also more trouble than Charity would like.

Sarah’s emotional journey has been anything but smooth. She recently developed feelings for Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant), but their relationship quickly turned complicated. Jacob’s hot-and-cold behavior left Sarah feeling rejected and heartbroken. This emotional turmoil led her to a dangerous low point, culminating in a hospital stay after she drank excessively. For anyone, this would be worrying — but for Sarah, it was especially serious.

Sarah has Fanconi anaemia, a rare genetic disorder that affects the bone marrow. It not only increases her risk of developing cancer but also means she might have a shorter-than-average life expectancy. This diagnosis casts a constant shadow over her life, making every health scare far more alarming than it would be for most people her age.

Despite his initial hesitation — and his mother Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi)’s warnings — Jacob eventually decided he wanted to be with Sarah, even knowing her health struggles. Leyla cautioned him against getting attached to someone with such an uncertain future, but Jacob’s feelings for Sarah won out. However, tragedy soon struck when Leyla died, leaving Jacob grief-stricken and emotionally withdrawn. He distanced himself from Sarah, leaving her heartbroken once again.

To make matters worse, Sarah believed she might be pregnant with Jacob’s baby. The thought was both terrifying and strangely hopeful for her — a chance to have a family of her own, something she feared her illness might prevent in the future. When she discovered it was a false alarm, the devastation hit her hard. It felt like one more cruel twist in an already painful chapter of her life.

After so much sadness and disappointment, it’s no wonder Sarah is desperate for some fun — a chance to feel like a normal teenager again, free from hospitals, heartbreak, and health worries. That chance arrives unexpectedly when she meets Kammy (played by Shebz Miah), a lively, charismatic young guy she stumbles upon as he struggles to start a quad bike on a country lane.

At first, Sarah has no idea that the quad bike is stolen — taken from Moira Dingle’s (Natalie J Robb) farm. The truth quickly becomes clear when Ross Barton (Mike Parr) shows up and starts accusing Kammy of theft. In a surprising move, Sarah covers for Kammy, choosing to protect him rather than turn him in. It’s an impulsive decision that sparks an instant connection between the two.

Before long, Sarah and Kammy are racing the stolen quads across the fields, laughing and embracing the kind of reckless thrill she hasn’t felt in a long time. After everything she’s been through, this rebellion feels liberating — a chance to let go of her worries, even if just for a little while.

Katie Hill, who plays Sarah, shared her excitement about Kammy’s arrival: “I can’t wait for the audience to meet Kammy — he’s a really fun character and a great addition to the village. We might even see him and Sarah get up to a bit of mischief together. It has been great having Shebz join the cast and he’s been brilliant to work with!”

It’s clear that Kammy brings a spark back into Sarah’s life, reminding her that she’s more than just her illness or the heartbreak she’s endured. He gives her a reason to smile again — but not everyone is convinced that’s a good thing.

When Charity stumbles upon Sarah and Kammy sharing a tender, intimate moment, her protective instincts kick in. Charity has watched her granddaughter endure more than her fair share of pain, and seeing Sarah grow close to someone who encourages her reckless side raises alarm bells. She knows how vulnerable Sarah is right now — emotionally and physically — and Kammy’s arrival feels like a wild card.

The big question is: will Charity see Kammy as a positive influence, giving Sarah a much-needed outlet for joy? Or will she worry that Kammy represents another risk — one Sarah can’t afford to take when her health hangs in such a delicate balance?
