SAD NEWS: The long-running British soap Emmerdale will no longer be eligible to compete in the Best Soap category at the upcoming BAFTA TV Awards after one of its former writers admitted to assaulting his partner—saying, “She deserved it, why can’t I h!t my wife?”

The long-running British daytime drama Emmerdale has officially been withdrawn from the

upcoming BAFTA TV Awards, meaning it will no longer be competing in the soap category. The decision was made by ITV, the network that produces and broadcasts the show, following disturbing revelations about one of its former writers. The news has sent

shockwaves through the industry, raising concerns about the impact of such controversies on television productions and awards considerations.

ITV announced its decision in a statement sent to BAFTA voters on Tuesday, explaining that Emmerdale was being pulled from this year’s awards “in consideration of recent news involving a member of the scriptwriting team.” The move came just hours after Martin Fustes, a former freelance writer for the soap, admitted in court to assaulting his partner. His conviction included causing actual bodily harm and an offence of intentional suffocation. As a result, he was handed a two-year suspended prison sentence. Additionally, he has been ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, attend 15 days of rehabilitation, and participate in a 26-session probation service domestic abuse programme.

The news has left many stunned, including those within ITV. A spokesperson for the network released a statement condemning Fustes’ actions, stating, “We were shocked and appalled to learn about the recent court case involving Emmerdale writer, Martin Fustes. Mr. Fustes is a freelance writer, and he has been informed that he will no longer be writing for Emmerdale. Everyone at ITV and Emmerdale abhors domestic abuse, which is why we have been highlighting the issue in a major storyline over the last 12 months. The Emmerdale production team were not aware of these charges against Mr. Fustes until we were alerted over the weekend.”

The timing of the scandal has complicated Emmerdale‘s position in the BAFTA TV Awards. The decision to withdraw the show from the soap category comes at a crucial moment, as the second round of voting for the prestigious awards is already underway. BAFTA has assured its members that anyone who had already cast a vote for Emmerdale will be given the opportunity to recast their vote. To accommodate this change, the organization has extended the round two voting deadline until 6 p.m. GMT (11 a.m. PT) on March 17.

The absence of Emmerdale from the soap category leaves an interesting landscape for the competition. BBC’s long-running medical drama Casualty has won the BAFTA for best soap in the last two consecutive years, and with Emmerdale out of the running, it could be well-positioned to continue its winning streak. Emmerdale last took home the award in 2020, a victory that recognized its strong storytelling and devoted fanbase.

The incident has sparked a wider discussion about the responsibilities of production companies when it comes to vetting freelance contributors and handling misconduct allegations. While ITV acted swiftly to sever ties with Fustes, the fact that these serious charges were unknown to the production team until recently has raised questions about oversight and accountability. Industry professionals and fans alike are debating whether a television show should be penalized in awards season due to the actions of an individual who was involved in its production but did not represent the entirety of its creative team.

Despite the controversy, Emmerdale remains one of the most popular and critically acclaimed soaps in the UK. Over the past year, the show has tackled numerous hard-hitting storylines, including domestic abuse, a topic that ironically aligns with the reason behind its BAFTA withdrawal. The decision to highlight such an issue in its narratives while now being associated with a scandal involving a former writer presents an unfortunate contradiction, further complicating the show’s public perception.

As Emmerdale grapples with the fallout of this scandal, ITV and BAFTA’s swift actions indicate that the industry is taking the matter seriously. The situation serves as a stark reminder that personal misconduct can have far-reaching consequences, affecting not only the individual involved but also the wider creative team and the reputation of a beloved television institution.

With the BAFTA TV Awards approaching, the soap category will now proceed without one of its strongest contenders. Whether this reshapes the landscape of the competition remains to be seen, but what is certain is that this incident has left an indelible mark on Emmerdale‘s journey in 2024.
