James Bye has officially moved on from his decade-long role as EastEnders’ Martin Fowler, and his latest project sees him stepping into a completely different world.

Just days after his emotional exit from the soap, the actor has secured a brand-new role—one that’s a far cry from his time on Albert Square.
A Drastic Transformation from Soap to Stage
The 40-year-old actor, best known for playing the beloved fruit and veg trader Martin Fowler,

has now taken on the role of Mr. Darcy in a theatrical adaptation of Death Comes to Pemberley. Based on the novel by P.D. James,

the production offers a fresh take on the world of Pride and Prejudice and will begin its run at The Mill at Sonning from May 1 to June 28, before embarking on a UK-wide tour.

To mark the announcement, newly released promotional photos reveal James in full period costume, portraying one of literature’s most iconic romantic heroes. The transformation is striking, as Bye trades Martin’s casual modern attire for the refined and elegant wardrobe of the 19th-century gentleman. In one of the images, he is pictured alongside Jamie-Rose Duke, who will be playing Elizabeth Darcy.
Reflecting on his transition from soap to stage, James expressed his excitement about taking on such a different role. “After a decade of gritty storylines, it’s going to be quite a switch to put on period clothes as one of literature’s romantic leading men, but I can’t wait for this new chapter to begin,” he said.
Martin Fowler’s Tragic Exit
James’ departure from EastEnders was nothing short of heartbreaking, as his character met a tragic end following the dramatic explosion at The Queen Vic. In his final scenes, Martin was trapped beneath a beam in the barrel store of the pub, struggling to hold on as his ex-wife Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) desperately waited for help.

As they sat together in the wreckage, Martin and Stacey reflected on their complicated history, rekindling their feelings and agreeing to give their relationship another chance. Just when it seemed they had a future together, their happiness was cruelly ripped away.
Once the debris was removed, Martin succumbed to Crush Syndrome, a fatal condition triggered by toxins flooding his body. Stacey’s agonizing scream confirmed his fate, sending shockwaves through Albert Square and leaving fans devastated.
A Fond Farewell to Albert Square
Following his exit, James took to social media to share his gratitude for his time on the soap. “Saying goodbye is not easy, but after 10 years at EastEnders and on the night of the show’s epic 40th anniversary, the time felt right,” he wrote. “It’s an honour to leave on a story of this magnitude.”

He also thanked the fans for their unwavering support, acknowledging that the soap would not be what it is without them. “This fruit and veg man will always hold a special place in my heart. It’s time to look forward, and I’m incredibly excited for what the future holds. RIP Martin Fowler.”
What’s Next for James Bye?
With his new stage role marking the beginning of a fresh chapter in his career, James is proving his versatility as an actor. Moving from the fast-paced world of soap operas to live theatre is no small feat, but his casting as Mr. Darcy signals an exciting shift.
As he prepares to take on this challenging role, fans of EastEnders will no doubt be eager to see how he brings the brooding yet charming character to life. With a new adventure on the horizon, James Bye is stepping into a world that’s truly worlds away from Walford.
