The late Coronation Street star Geoffrey Hinsliff, best known for his decade-long portrayal of taxi driver Don Brennan, left a sizable fortune to his loved ones. 

Newly released probate records reveal that the esteemed actor’s estate was valued at £336,755, which, after deductions, was reduced to £333,214. 

His final wishes ensured that his beloved wife and children were well taken care of, demonstrating the deep love he held for his family.

A Lasting Legacy

Hinsliff, who passed away on September 15, 2023, at the age of 86, left £5,000 to his nephew, Russell Johnson, with the remainder of his estate going to his wife, Judith. 

Geoffrey and Judith shared a long and devoted marriage, having tied the knot in 1967. 

Their union brought them two daughters, Gaby and Sophie, who, along with their mother, fondly described the actor as “restless, curious, adventurous, and funny.”

In a heartfelt statement, his family reflected on his personality, saying, “He loved nothing better than setting the world to rights around the dinner table.” However, despite his vibrant outlook and many adventures, they emphasized that “it was family and home that ultimately mattered to him most.”

An Iconic Career on Coronation Street

Born in Leeds in 1937, Geoffrey Hinsliff trained at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) before launching his acting career. His early roles included appearances in classic British television shows such as Z-Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, Adam Adamant Lives!, Crown Court, The Professionals, and Heartbeat. He also had the unique distinction of appearing in two Doctor Who stories, Image of the Fendahl and Nightmare of Eden.

However, it was his role as Don Brennan in Coronation Street that cemented his place in British television history. Hinsliff initially appeared in the soap in the 1960s and 1970s in minor roles before landing the part of Don Brennan in 1987. His character quickly became a household name, largely due to his tumultuous on-screen marriage to Ivy Tilsley, played by the late Lynne Perrie.

Don was known for his complex and often troubled personal life, which included extramarital affairs, financial struggles, and violent outbursts. His most infamous storyline saw him kidnapping Alma Halliwell (Amanda Barrie) in a desperate attempt to take revenge on her husband, Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs). This ultimately led to his dramatic exit from the soap in 1997 when his character perished in a fiery car crash.

A Respected Performer Beyond the Cobbles

Although Coronation Street made him a household name, Hinsliff’s career extended far beyond the cobbles of Weatherfield. He took on diverse roles in both television and theater, including a notable performance as Dr. Astrov in Uncle Vanya at the Leeds Playhouse, directed by Michael Attenborough.

His film credits included a small but memorable role as a wireless operator in the acclaimed war film A Bridge Too Far.

Hinsliff’s contributions to British television were widely recognized and respected, with colleagues and fans mourning his passing. Coronation Street producers paid tribute to his legacy, stating that his on-screen partnership with Lynne Perrie was “something rather special” and brought joy to millions of viewers over the years.

A Life Well Lived

Following his departure from the entertainment industry, Hinsliff spent his later years in the picturesque village of Winster in the Derbyshire Dales. His death marked the end of a remarkable life filled with memorable performances and personal dedication to his loved ones.

Helen Worth, who plays Gail Platt in Coronation Street, spoke warmly of her former co-star, saying, “Geoff was a lovely, quiet man who will be sadly missed by us all.”

Hinsliff’s legacy as an actor, husband, and father endures not only through his unforgettable television moments but also through the family he cherished. His final act of generosity ensures that his wife, children, and nephew will continue to benefit from the life he built, leaving behind both a financial and emotional legacy that reflects the deep love he had for them.
