The soap opera world was rocked last week when General Hospital bid farewell to one of its most complex villains, Cyrus Renault.
Played by Jeff Kober, Cyrus met his dramatic end at the hands of Josslyn Jacks (Eden McCoy), marking the conclusion of his five-year reign of terror in Port Charles.
Now, Kober is speaking out about his character’s demise and reflecting on his time on the long-running daytime drama.
Since his debut in 2020, Kober’s portrayal of the calculating and enigmatic crime boss captivated audiences.
His performance even earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2022.
Despite playing a ruthless villain, Kober’s ability to bring depth and nuance to the role made Cyrus a compelling figure on the show.
In a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest, the 71-year-old actor admitted he is still processing his exit.
“I’m just now starting to process it because I shot five episodes on January 15th, and on January 16th, I flew to India for nearly a month,” Kober revealed. “I had all the experiences that one has when one goes to India for nearly a month.”
Despite wrapping up his storyline, Kober confessed that leaving General Hospital has been an emotional experience. “I miss going to work, I miss the people, I miss the process. I gotta tell you, I love acting on a soap,” he said. “It’s so dangerous for an actor to let go and let the scene happen, and General Hospital gave me an opportunity to practice that letting go, day after day after day, and I relished that. And I will miss that.”
Kober also reflected on how his character’s journey took unexpected turns, particularly with Cyrus’ supposed redemption arc. In December, it was revealed that Cyrus was responsible for the death of Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), a twist Kober found surprising. “The thing about soap opera writing and acting is, it’s always open to interpretation,” he explained. “As an actor, you kind of have to be ready, willing, and able to jump in a particular direction.”
Recalling his reaction to the script, Kober joked, “When I saw that script, I said, ‘Wait a minute! Don’t I get a vote?’ And they said, ‘No, of course not.’”
Ultimately, he found the darker turn for his character to be a return to form. “The whole thing of, ‘Did he find God or not?’—we lived in that world for a long time, and from that perspective, it was kind of a relief to go, like, ‘Oh, he’s killing people. Even if he’s doing it in the name of the Lord, still, he’s killing people!’”
One of Kober’s final scenes saw his character gunned down by Josslyn Jacks, a moment he described as one of his favorite death scenes. “I’ve died many times in many different storylines, and I think this is perhaps one of my best deaths,” he admitted. “There was a measure of magic in those final scenes. So, I’m really happy with the way it turned out. I do feel like it was a good death.”
Kober also had high praise for his co-star, Eden McCoy, calling his time working with her “a joy.” While Cyrus’ departure is bound to have lasting repercussions in Port Charles, Kober hopes the audience appreciates the depth and evolution of the character over time.
“I would like to thank the audience for working through their initial hatred of Cyrus—of course, this is just from social media, that’s all I can go on—to embracing him as a valid character and a good place to put their anger and judgment and hatred!” he said.
As he bids farewell to General Hospital, Kober expressed gratitude for the fans and the entire experience. “I really do appreciate the fans’ appreciation of me and of the character and of the stories we were able to tell. There’s nothing like the GH audience! They’re so solid and delightful in all my experiences with them.”
While Cyrus Renault may be gone, Jeff Kober’s impact on General Hospital will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come. His compelling portrayal of one of the show’s most memorable villains has left an indelible mark on Port Charles, and fans will surely miss seeing him on their screens.
