How Alexa Havins’ family supports her General Hospital career—and just how powerful she is in real life!

Here’s How Alexa Havins’ Family Supports Her General Hospital Career

Alexa Havins has taken on one of General Hospital’s most emotional and challenging roles as Lulu Spencer, a beloved character who recently awakened from a years-long coma.

While Lulu’s life in Port Charles has been filled with turmoil, Havins’ real life is much more stable, thanks to the unwavering support of her family.

In a recent interview, she opened up about how she and her husband, Justin Bruening, work together to balance her acting career and family life.

Prioritizing Family Over Career

Havins recently spoke with Soap Opera Digest about her decision to step away from acting before landing her GH role.

She had initially retired from Hollywood to focus on raising her four children with Bruening, whom she met while working on All My Children. The couple married in 2005 and built a life centered around their growing family.

For Havins, the choice to leave acting behind wasn’t difficult—it was simply the right decision for her family. “It seemed like the right thing to do,” she explained. While she loved her career, being away from her children for extended periods was challenging. With Bruening taking on more acting roles, they made a conscious effort to stay together as a family, often traveling with him for work.

A Marriage Built on Support and Balance

Havins and Bruening always knew they wanted to put their family first, which meant finding ways to minimize time apart. The couple set a strict limit on how long they were willing to be separated due to work commitments. This rule became a cornerstone of their marriage, ensuring they remained a united front for their children.

This balance allowed Havins to take on the role of Lulu Spencer without disrupting the strong foundation they had built at home. Rather than feeling torn between work and family, she has found a way to thrive in both areas, thanks to her husband’s unwavering support.

Justin Bruening: Husband, Teacher, and Acting Coach

Beyond being a dedicated husband and father, Bruening plays an active role in supporting Havins’ General Hospital career. The couple homeschools their children, and Havins credited Bruening for stepping up in every way possible. “He’s my child care, he’s our substitute teacher, and he’s my professional line reader,” she shared.

Preparing for her role as Lulu requires extensive script work, and Havins revealed that Bruening enthusiastically helps her rehearse. She humorously described how she’ll bring home a hefty pile of scripts, dramatically drop them in front of him, and say, “All right, let’s do this! Let’s run these lines!”

Bruening has fully embraced his unofficial role as her acting coach, taking on multiple character voices to help her prepare. He even joked about playing Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot), stating that he channels “that deep emotional level that Tracy has” when reading her lines. His playful approach has turned script rehearsals into a fun and supportive bonding experience for the couple.

A Strong Partnership in Work and Life

Havins’ return to acting as Lulu Spencer is a significant shift from her previous decision to step away from the industry. However, with Bruening by her side, she has been able to pursue this opportunity without sacrificing the strong family dynamic they’ve worked hard to maintain.

By setting priorities, supporting each other’s careers, and making family time non-negotiable, Havins and Bruening have created a partnership that allows them both to succeed. While Port Charles may be full of drama, their real-life story is one of teamwork, love, and dedication.

As General Hospital viewers watch Lulu navigate her emotional return, they can rest assured that behind the scenes, Havins has a loving and supportive family cheering her on every step of the way.
