Emmerdale star Natalie Ann Jamieson reveals she had to reshoot her death scene multiple times because she kept crying and was “emotionally breaking down”: “I can’t believe I had to go through that on set one day…”

Natalie Ann Jamieson has opened up about the emotional challenges of filming her final scenes as Amy Wyatt in Emmerdale,

revealing that she had to repeat several takes because she was overwhelmed with emotion.

In a dramatic exit from the long-running ITV soap, Amy dies after a devastating limousine crash leaves her trapped under a frozen lake.

The tragic scenes, which air on Thursday, show Amy briefly regaining consciousness in the hospital before passing away.

In her final moments, she manages to bid farewell to her young son Kyle (Huey Quinn)

and tries to warn her husband Matty Barton (Ash Palmisciano) about a body she saw in the water while trapped under the ice.

Speaking to PA News Agency, Jamieson shared her experience of filming the emotional farewell, describing it as “just so sad.”

“Once Amy has died, there are scenes with Matty and her mother, Kerry (Laura Norton), where they are lying with her on the bed, talking to her,” she explained. “I was just an emotional wreck. And at that point, I was supposed to be playing dead, but I was doing the worst dead acting ever.”

The actress admitted she struggled to remain still as tears streamed down her face. “I was trying not to vibrate from crying, and I just thought, ‘Oh goodness, we’ll have to go again on that one.’”

While Wednesday’s episode saw Amy suffering a seizure in the hospital, her final scenes on Thursday promise to be even more heart-wrenching, leaving her loved ones utterly devastated. Matty, in particular, is left inconsolable as he struggles to come to terms with his wife’s death.

Reflecting on her departure from Emmerdale after six years, Jamieson admitted that leaving the soap has been bittersweet. “It’s obviously emotional because six years is a long time to be somewhere,” she said. “I know I’m not losing my friends—I still get to keep them—but I won’t be going in and seeing them at work every day, and that part of it is really sad.”

Filming the underwater scenes for Amy’s tragic final moments was another major challenge for the actress. The intense sequences, which required her to be submerged in a swimming pool, involved extensive preparation. She revealed that she had to wear a wetsuit with weights and practice holding her breath while fully clothed.

“We did quick training beforehand, learning how to dive down three meters in my clothes and shoes, then resurface while equalizing for ear pressure,” she explained.

Although she initially feared she might panic, Jamieson found herself more at ease once filming began. “Once I started thinking about what Amy was going through, I naturally stayed down there for longer,” she said.

For one of the crucial shots, an arm is seen appearing from beneath the lake, leading to speculation that the body might belong to Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter), who previously exited the soap.

Jamieson compared the filming experience to Titanic, the 1997 Oscar-winning film, due to the elaborate setup. “We spent one whole day filming in the pool, which was fully dressed for the scene, so that was just me alone underwater,” she recalled.

The above-water sequences, which depicted the ice breaking, were filmed using a specially created wax surface. The entire shoot took about a week, with night shoots running from 6 PM to 2 AM. “Every single shot of me coming out of the lake required me to be soaking wet again,” she added.

The emotional weight of filming her final scenes was compounded by the fact that the cast and crew were also feeling the impact of her departure. “It was incredibly sad,” Jamieson admitted. “There was an extra level of emotion, not just because of what the characters were experiencing, but because of what we were feeling as a group.”

Amy’s death isn’t the only tragedy to strike the village following the limo crash. Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough) and Leyla Harding (Roxy Shahidi) also lose their lives in the catastrophe, sending shockwaves through Emmerdale.

Beyond her time on the soap, Jamieson has built an impressive acting résumé, having appeared in ITV’s detective drama Vera and the BBC medical series Doctors. Her work on Emmerdale earned her a nomination for Best Newcomer at the TV Choice Awards in 2019. She took over the role of Amy Wyatt from Chelsea Halfpenny in 2019 and has since been at the center of several major storylines.

As Emmerdale fans prepare to say goodbye to Amy Wyatt, Jamieson’s heartfelt performance ensures that her character’s tragic exit will not be forgotten anytime soon.
