The cause of General Hospital star Leslie Charleson’s de@th is revealed after more than a month—and it was m^rder!

One month after General Hospital legend Leslie Charleson passed away at the age of 79, new details surrounding her cause of death have come to light.

The County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner has officially determined that the actress died due to “sequelae of blunt head trauma,” a condition resulting from a previous head injury.

The medical examiner classified her manner of death as an accident, according to online records viewed by E! News on February 13.

A History of Health Struggles

Beyond the effects of her past skull injury, Charleson was also dealing with several health conditions at the time of her passing.

According to the medical examiner’s report, she had been diagnosed with asthma, arthritis,

atrial fibrillation, and normal pressure hydrocephalus—a disorder where cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain’s ventricles.

This condition can lead to symptoms such as memory loss, difficulty walking, and a loss of bladder control.

Charleson had suffered multiple falls over the years, which had previously impacted her ability to appear on General Hospital. In 2017, she sustained a leg injury that forced her to take a break from the show. While she returned to her role as Monica Quartermaine, her health issues ultimately led to her stepping away from the long-running soap in 2023.

A Soap Opera Icon

Charleson was a beloved fixture on General Hospital, portraying Monica Bard Webber (later Monica Quartermaine) for nearly five decades. She first joined the cast in 1977 and became a cornerstone of the iconic Quartermaine family. With her departure in 2023, she held the record for the longest tenure of any cast member on the show.

Her portrayal of Monica earned her widespread acclaim, and fans adored her character’s compelling storylines—from dramatic love affairs to high-stakes medical crises. Her presence helped shape General Hospital into the beloved daytime drama that it remains today.

Heartfelt Tributes from the General Hospital Family

Following Charleson’s passing on January 12, General Hospital executive producer Frank Valentini paid tribute to the actress, acknowledging her remarkable contributions to the show both on and off screen.

“Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone,” Valentini wrote in a heartfelt statement. “Just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew.”

Valentini also shared his personal admiration for Charleson, saying, “I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit, and incredible presence on set. On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time.”

Leslie Charleson’s Love for Her Craft

Throughout her career, Charleson remained deeply appreciative of her work on General Hospital. In a 2001 interview with Soap Opera Digest, she expressed gratitude for the job that brought her both professional fulfillment and a devoted fan base.

“I really do love this job,” she said. “Look at it this way—what better job can you do than get up in the morning, roll out of bed, throw something on, and then have someone take care of how you look, how you dress, and what you say? How much more grateful could you possibly be?”

Her passion for acting and her dedication to her role as Monica Quartermaine left an undeniable impact on the world of daytime television.

A Lasting Legacy

Leslie Charleson’s passing marks the end of an era for General Hospital, but her influence will live on through the stories she helped bring to life. Her portrayal of Monica Quartermaine was a defining presence on the show for nearly 50 years, and her legacy as a soap opera icon is undeniable.

While her fans, friends, and colleagues continue to mourn her loss, they also celebrate the decades of entertainment and unforgettable moments she brought to General Hospital. Charleson may be gone, but the impact of her work—and the love she shared with the soap opera community—will never be forgotten.
