Claire Sweeney, known to television audiences today as Cassie Plummer in Coronation

Street, has shared the remarkable story of how she landed her first major soap opera role in Brookside. It was not through an agent’s call or an audition notice but rather through the power of a heartfelt letter that she wrote while working on a cruise ship. Sweeney’s journey

from cruise ship singer to household name is a testament to the unpredictable nature of

show business and the importance of taking a chance when opportunity knocks.
Before she became a familiar face on British television, Sweeney worked as a singer on cruise ships. Her love for Brookside, the Channel 4 soap, was so profound that she had her mother send her Betamax recordings of the show while she was away at sea. As a dedicated fan, she never missed an episode, even if she was thousands of miles from home. Brookside had captured her imagination, and she found herself deeply engrossed in the lives of the residents of Brookside Close.
Her break came in 1991 when she was offered a small role in the soap as Lindsey Corkhill. At the time, Sweeney had already committed to a six-month contract as a cruise ship performer. Despite the opportunity, she honored her commitment and performed in one episode of Brookside before returning to the high seas. It seemed like her dream of being part of her favorite television show was over as quickly as it had begun.
Speaking with fellow soap star Michael Galvin during an appearance on Shortland Street, Sweeney recalled how the fleeting taste of soap stardom never left her mind. She recounted how much she loved the show and how surreal it had been to step into that world, even for just one episode. Her passion for acting and her love for Brookside lingered, and four years later, she decided to act on that desire.
“The funny thing was, I was a fan of the show,” Sweeney explained. “I used to sing on cruise ships, and my mum used to send me the Betamax videos because I was obsessed with Brookside.” This obsession would ultimately serve as the catalyst for her return to the soap.
While on one of her cruises, she took a leap of faith and wrote a letter to the producers of Brookside. In the letter, she inquired about the possibility of reprising her role, however small it might be. She asked if that “one episode” was still available, despite the four-year gap. It was a long shot, and Sweeney admitted that she had no expectations when she posted the letter.
Remarkably, the timing of her letter was nothing short of serendipitous. Mal Young, one of the producers at Brookside, received the letter on the very day the team was heading into a storyline conference to discuss the show’s future plots. Young took the letter into the meeting, placed it on the table, and the team considered her request. Had the letter arrived a day later, Sweeney’s career might have taken a very different path.

“The day Mal Young, our producer, received the letter was the day they were going into a future storyline conference,” Sweeney said. “He went in and put the letter on the table. A day later, it wouldn’t have happened.”
Thanks to her bold move and that perfect timing, Sweeney was written back into the soap. Her character, Lindsey Corkhill, became more prominent, and she went on to appear in Brookside from 1991 until 2003. Her character’s storylines, including her tumultuous relationship with Barry Grant, captured viewers’ imaginations.
Sweeney fondly remembered the thrill of working alongside her on-screen love interest. “My pin-up at the time was a character called Barry Grant – and I was getting to snog him!” she said with a laugh.
Her experience in Brookside launched her successful television career, eventually leading her to her current role in Coronation Street. Sweeney’s story is a reminder of how persistence, passion, and a little bit of luck can open unexpected doors. From fan to star, she proved that sometimes, taking the time to write a letter can change everything.
