Iconic EastEnders duo Garry Hobbs and Minty Peterson have returned to Albert Square in the most celebrated surprise event on BBC One in years, but it’s left fans with a big question…

As EastEnders prepares to mark its 40th anniversary, fans are in for a nostalgic treat with the return of two beloved characters—Garry Hobbs and Minty Peterson.

The duo, played by Ricky Groves and Cliff Parisi, made their long-awaited comeback to Albert Square this week, surprising viewers and long-time residents of Walford alike.

Their reappearance at The Queen Vic comes as part of Billy Mitchell’s stag do, a momentous occasion that BBC bosses kept tightly under wraps.

It has been over a decade since Garry and Minty last graced our screens, making their return all the more special for dedicated fans of the soap.

A Welcome Return to Albert Square

Fans were in for a shock when Garry and Minty strolled into The Queen Vic, bringing their signature humor and charm.

Their arrival was met with delight from familiar faces, including Stacey Slater, Alfie Moon, Billy Mitchell, and Honey Mitchell.

The duo immediately settled back into their old dynamic, with Minty humorously referring to Garry as his “adoptive grown-up child and lodger.”

Since leaving Walford, Garry has been working as a bingo caller, while Minty has found happiness in marriage. Despite all the years apart, their friendship has remained as strong as ever, proving that some bonds are unbreakable.

Garry and Minty’s History in Walford

Garry Hobbs was last seen on EastEnders in 2009 when he bid farewell to Albert Square alongside Dawn Swann, played by Kara Tointon. The couple had planned a new life together, setting off on a sailing adventure, but things didn’t go as planned. Their boat sank, and their relationship ultimately failed, leaving Garry to pick up the pieces of his life elsewhere.

During his time on the soap, Garry was part of several memorable storylines, including his tumultuous relationship with Lynne Slater. Their romance ended in heartbreak when their baby, Vivienne, was tragically stillborn following a fairground accident. Devastated, Garry attempted to take his own life but was saved by none other than his best friend, Minty.

Minty, played by Cliff Parisi, remained in Walford for a short time after Garry’s departure, but in 2010, he too decided it was time for a fresh start. His character left Albert Square in search of new beginnings, and fans always hoped that he and Garry would reunite beyond the Square’s borders.

Now, thanks to EastEnders’ 40th-anniversary celebrations, fans finally have confirmation that their friendship has stood the test of time.

Keeping the Surprise Under Wraps

The return of Garry and Minty was kept completely under wraps by BBC bosses, making it a truly unexpected treat for fans. The secrecy surrounding their return ensured that their surprise entrance had maximum impact, bringing a wave of nostalgia to viewers who fondly remember their antics from the early 2000s.

Social media erupted with excitement after their reappearance, with many calling for the pair to stick around in Walford for longer. Their comedic chemistry and lighthearted presence have been sorely missed, and their return only highlighted how much they brought to the soap in their heyday.

Where Are Ricky Groves and Cliff Parisi Now?

Since departing EastEnders, both Ricky Groves and Cliff Parisi have continued their careers in television.

Ricky Groves, who played Garry, has appeared in various reality TV shows, including Celebrity Coach Trip and Pointless Celebrities. His natural comedic timing and down-to-earth personality have kept him a fan favorite even outside of his EastEnders role.

Cliff Parisi, meanwhile, has remained a familiar face on British television. After saying goodbye to Minty, he went on to make guest appearances in shows such as Hollyoaks, where he played the character of Walt, and Hustle, where he portrayed Arnie. However, he is perhaps best known for his long-running role as Fred Buckle in Call the Midwife, a part he has played since 2012.

In addition to his acting work, Parisi took on a completely different challenge in 2019 when he joined the cast of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! His stint in the jungle introduced him to a whole new audience and showcased his fun-loving personality.

A Nostalgic Moment for Fans

The return of Garry and Minty for EastEnders’ 40th anniversary has been a heartwarming moment for long-time viewers. Their reunion in The Queen Vic served as a reminder of the soap’s rich history and its ability to bring back familiar faces in a way that feels natural and meaningful.

While their visit to Walford may be brief, their impact on the show—and on fans—remains significant. Whether or not this surprise appearance leads to a more permanent return remains to be seen, but for now, their comeback has added a much-needed touch of nostalgia to the celebrations.

With EastEnders pulling out all the stops for its milestone anniversary, it’s clear that the show is embracing its past while continuing to move forward. And for fans of Garry and Minty, this week’s episode was a delightful trip down memory lane—one that they won’t soon forget.
