EastEnders fans were left stunned on Thursday night as two beloved characters made a surprise return to Albert Square.

Longtime fan favorites Garry Hobbs (Ricky Groves) and Minty Peterson (Cliff Parisi) walked back into the Queen Vic for Billy Mitchell’s (Perry Fenwick) stag do,
marking their first appearance on the soap in years.
The duo, who were both mechanics and best friends during their time in Walford, were part of some of the show’s most memorable storylines in the early 2000s.

Their unexpected return as part of EastEnders’ 40th-anniversary celebrations had viewers buzzing with excitement,

as they turned up at Billy’s pre-wedding celebrations to surprise their old mate.

A Surprise Reunion in the Queen Vic
As the festivities were underway in the Queen Vic, the atmosphere shifted when Garry and Minty made their grand entrance. Bursting into the pub, Garry immediately questioned the energy of the party, exclaiming: “Call this a stag do?!” Minty quickly followed up with his own playful jab, adding: “Call yourself a Mitchell?”
Billy was overwhelmed with joy upon seeing his old friends, embracing them as the pub erupted into cheers. Minty, in his usual humorous fashion, quipped: “We thought we’d pop in and offer our commiserations— I mean, congratulations!”
The unexpected reunion didn’t just surprise Billy but also left Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) in shock as they celebrated with the wedding party.
Fans React to the Big Return
The return of Garry and Minty was kept under wraps ahead of the episode, making it an even bigger surprise for long-time viewers. Fans quickly took to social media to express their excitement, with many thrilled to see the pair back on-screen.
One fan wrote: “Garry and Minty’s return was surprising and amazing! #EastEnders” while another added: “Wow! Why couldn’t Minty and Garry stay longer?”

A third posted: “The scream I let out when seeing Minty and Garry, OMG!!!!”
Another viewer praised the soap for keeping the secret, tweeting: “I’m so glad they didn’t announce Garry and Minty’s return beforehand. What a great surprise!”
Many fans also called for the duo to return on a more permanent basis, with one saying: “I can’t get enough of @bbceastenders this week! Garry and Minty was a nice surprise, we need more appearances or get them back full-time! #EastEnders #EastEnders40”
Where Have Garry and Minty Been?
For newer viewers who may not be familiar with these two EastEnders legends, Garry Hobbs and Minty Peterson were best mates and mechanics at the Arches garage. Their on-screen bromance and comedic moments made them fan favorites throughout the 2000s.
Minty, played by Cliff Parisi, first appeared in EastEnders in 2002 and remained a staple of the show until 2010. Over the years, he was involved in a number of major storylines, including his turbulent relationship with Garry’s mum, Hazel, and his heartbreak following the tragic death of Heather Trott. Since leaving EastEnders, Parisi has gone on to star in Call the Midwife, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, Plebs, and All Those Small Things.

Meanwhile, Garry, played by Ricky Groves, arrived in Walford in 2000 and stayed until 2009. He had a string of ill-fated romances before eventually leaving the Square with Dawn Swann (Kara Tointon) to start a new life away from Walford.
Big Changes for EastEnders’ 40th Anniversary
The surprise return of Garry and Minty is just one of many big moments planned for EastEnders’ milestone 40th-anniversary celebrations.
As part of the festivities, the BBC has announced a special EastEnders schedule shake-up. Next week, episodes of the soap will not be made available early on BBC iPlayer, meaning fans will have to watch live on TV for the first time in years.
Additionally, on Wednesday, February 20, EastEnders will air a special hour-long episode, leading into a live episode on Thursday, February 21— an event that promises to be packed with drama, twists, and surprises.

A Nostalgic and Exciting Celebration
With the return of Garry and Minty, EastEnders continues to embrace its legacy while celebrating four decades on British television. As the show gears up for its special live episode, fans can only wonder if more familiar faces will return to Albert Square.
One thing is certain— the soap’s 40th anniversary is shaping up to be an unforgettable event, packed with nostalgia, excitement, and plenty of surprises. And if Garry and Minty’s comeback is anything to go by, fans should be prepared for even more jaw-dropping moments in the weeks ahead!
