In a recent exclusive interview, actor Matthew Wolfenden opened up about his decision to leave *Emmerdale* after an impressive 18-year run as David Metcalfe.

Wolfenden’s departure from the iconic ITV soap in August 2023 shocked many fans, as he had become one of the show’s most well-known characters.
His exit played out on-screen in April 2023, marking the end of an era for both the actor and his beloved character.
Matthew Wolfenden’s departure was not entirely motivated by a desire to leave the show, however.

Instead, it was a conflict with a strict backstage rule that led him to ultimately make the difficult decision.

The rule in question was *Emmerdale*’s longstanding policy regarding panto season, or more specifically, their “no panto” rule, which ultimately put Wolfenden in a tough spot.

In the interview, Wolfenden revealed that he had been offered the opportunity to star in *Elf: The Musical*, playing the role of Buddy in an eight-week run in London’s West End. While the role was a dream for the actor, he quickly realized that his contract with *Emmerdale* would not allow him to take time off for the show due to the aforementioned “no panto” rule. The soap has a strict policy of not allowing its cast members to leave during the Christmas season to perform in pantomimes or other theatre productions, a policy that aims to prevent other actors from requesting similar breaks during the busy holiday season.
Wolfenden explained, “The problem is they don’t let people out at Christmas to do panto, because their reasoning is if we left one person out, we’ve got to open it up to everyone and we could lose half our cast at Christmas.” The actor further clarified that while *Elf: The Musical* was not a pantomime, it still occurred during the panto season, and the producers were unwilling to make an exception. He understood the reasoning behind the rule but was left with a tough decision: continue his 18-year career with *Emmerdale* or seize the chance to pursue his dream role in the West End.
Wolfenden acknowledged the magnitude of his decision, saying, “My contract was coming to an end and I had this big decision to make, do I leave an 18-year job to do an eight-week show?” The actor went on to admit that, in hindsight, it seemed somewhat “crazy” to leave a well-paid, long-term job for such a short opportunity. “When you look back, to leave a well-paid job to go and do an eight-week run is a little crazy,” he said. However, he also recognized that he was at a point in his career where he could not afford to pass up the opportunity, adding, “I’m 44 now, I was 43 at the time and I thought if I don’t do it now then I’ll never do it.”

Wolfenden’s decision to leave *Emmerdale* marked the end of David Metcalfe’s storyline, with his character deciding to leave the village after discovering his son Jacob was in a relationship with his ex, Victoria. The betrayal was too much for David to handle, leading to his emotional exit from the village. Fans were left heartbroken by his departure, as David had been a central figure in the show for nearly two decades.
While Wolfenden’s departure from *Emmerdale* came as a surprise to many, it’s clear that he has no regrets about his decision. His move into the West End allowed him to explore new creative opportunities, and he was eager to take on the challenge. Although he left *Emmerdale* behind, the actor’s career is far from over, and his fans are excited to see what he does next.

Wolfenden’s time on *Emmerdale* will always be a significant part of his career, and his portrayal of David Metcalfe remains one of the most beloved characters in the show’s history. As the actor continues to explore new avenues in his career, it’s clear that his legacy in the village will not soon be forgotten.
