General Hospital: Sonny’s successor on General Hospital would be Jason, but it’s Kai! Why him?

Following a recent health scare on General Hospital, Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) has found himself at a crossroads,

contemplating retirement from the dangerous world of organized crime.

As the patriarch of the Corinthos family and the most powerful mob boss in Port Charles, Sonny understands that stepping away from the life he’s built won’t be easy.

He’s considering passing the torch to someone he can trust—someone who understands the risks, can manage the ruthless underworld,

and will ensure the safety of the people of Port Charles.

But with a legacy to protect, the question remains: who will be the right person to take over the Corinthos empire?

Jason Morgan: The Obvious Choice

For years, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) has served as Sonny’s trusted right-hand man. With decades of experience in the business and an unbreakable bond of loyalty, Jason is the most logical choice to take over the reins of the Corinthos organization. Sonny knows that Jason not only has the expertise but also the resolve to fend off rivals and manage the family business with precision.

However, when Sonny made the offer in a General Hospital episode airing on December 3, Jason surprised everyone by turning him down. The decision stems from Jason’s focus on his son, Danny (Asher Antonyzyn), as he contemplates his future as a single father. This refusal forces Sonny to look elsewhere for a suitable successor, opening the door to new possibilities.

Michael Corinthos: A Potential Heir

Sonny’s eldest son, Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell), has long been part of the Corinthos family business. His strategic mind and cunning have proven valuable in multiple situations, from seeking revenge to navigating the intricacies of the criminal world. Michael’s familiarity with the inner workings of his father’s empire makes him a potential heir, though he hasn’t always embraced the life his father leads.

Rumors circulating about Michael’s departure from the show suggest that his character will exit following a fire that leaves him severely injured. If Michael returns after this traumatic event, he could come back a changed man—hardened, brooding, and potentially more suited for the demands of the mob boss role. However, Sonny has long resisted the idea of his children becoming involved in his dangerous world, meaning Michael would likely face opposition if he seeks to claim the Corinthos empire. Still, his eventual return could see him vying for control, perhaps even outmaneuvering his father.

Kristina Corinthos: A Surprising Contender

Although Sonny has always been protective of his children, Kristina (Kate Mansi) has begun to show signs of following in her father’s footsteps. The General Hospital writers have recently drawn comparisons between Kristina and Sonny, particularly in their impulsive behavior and fiery temper. Could Kristina be the next one to take control of the family business?

Though Kristina lacks the deep knowledge of the empire that her brothers Michael and Morgan possess, her potential to learn and adapt cannot be overlooked. However, for her to take over, several circumstances would have to align. Sonny would have to be incapacitated, potentially due to his recent heart issues, and Jason would need to be out of the picture for the moment. If those conditions occurred, Kristina could step into the role—though it would require considerable convincing for Sonny to accept her as his successor.

Johnny Zacchara: A Wild Card Option

A less conventional choice for the head of the Corinthos organization is Johnny Zacchara (Brandon Barash), a character who hasn’t been seen in Port Charles for years but remains a notable figure in the world of mobsters. Despite his history of antagonism with Sonny, Johnny is one of the few people who has shown a deep understanding of the underworld while maintaining a sense of morality. He’s compassionate toward civilians and has a genuine care for Sonny’s family, including Kristina and Carly.

Although Sonny has always held a deep disdain for Johnny, the two share a complicated history, and it’s possible that under certain circumstances, Sonny could consider him as a successor. Should Sonny experience another serious health crisis, and with Jason’s backing, Johnny could be persuaded to step into the role of mob boss—though it would likely take some time and significant convincing.

Who Will Lead the Family Next?

Sonny’s contemplation of retirement is a pivotal moment for the General Hospital narrative. As he reflects on his legacy and the future of his family, the question of who will succeed him remains unanswered. Whether it’s Michael, Kristina, or even Johnny, the decision will have profound implications for the future of the Corinthos empire. Only time will tell if Sonny truly steps down, and who will rise to take his place. For now, viewers will have to stay tuned as the story unfolds.
