Best known for his role as Masood Ahmed in EastEnders, star Nitin Ganatra reveals his new therapeutic career after his childhood dream failed!

Nitin Ganatra, best known for his iconic portrayal of Masood Ahmed in EastEnders, is embarking on a new and exciting chapter of his life.

After decades in the spotlight as an actor, Nitin has rediscovered his childhood passion for painting, hosting his own pop-up art exhibition in London.

This creative journey, however, has not come without its challenges, as a cruel encounter in his youth once caused him to abandon his artistic dreams.

The story began when Nitin, at the age of 17, was on a train en route to an interview at Bristol University, portfolio in hand.

During the trip, he met an art dealer, whom he hoped would offer advice on his work.

When the dealer reviewed his portfolio, he dismissed it with disdain, telling Nitin, “You’re never going to make it.

Forget it, this is schoolboy stuff.” The harsh rejection left a lasting impact on the young artist, causing him to put aside his dream of becoming a professional painter.

As a child, Nitin had found solace in drawing and painting, using art as a form of therapy during what he describes as a tumultuous upbringing. Whether rain or snow, he was always found with a brush or pencil in hand, pouring his emotions onto paper or canvas. Despite this early passion, the art dealer’s cruel words made him doubt his potential, and for years, he abandoned his dream to pursue other career paths, including acting.

Reflecting on his past, Nitin now offers advice to his younger self, encouraging him to not let the negativity of others dictate his future. “Learn to say ‘Go f*** yourself’ more often,” he says with a smile. “Don’t believe everything you’re told. People will knock you down, but their words are a reflection of their own insecurities, not your worth.” For years, Nitin allowed others’ comments to derail his dreams, but now, with years of experience and self-reflection, he has found the strength to pursue art again.

Nitin’s acting career, which has spanned over 30 years, has been incredibly successful. He earned his Equity card in 1994, and his role as Masood Ahmed in EastEnders remains one of his most beloved performances. Despite the challenges he faced, Nitin’s acting career provided a sense of fulfillment. However, it was during the pandemic lockdown that he rediscovered his love for painting, a passion that has reignited with great enthusiasm.

During a time of personal struggle and depression, Nitin turned to art once more. “It was like falling in love again with my younger self,” he says. “I reconnected with art in such a profound way that I couldn’t stop painting.” His paintings, many of which were created during lockdown, became an emotional outlet and a form of therapy. For Nitin, painting allowed him to regain control over his life and creativity, something he had not felt in his acting career, which often required collaboration with writers, directors, and producers.

The positive reception he received when he shared his art on social media encouraged him to take his passion further. His first exhibition, hosted by Integrity International Trust, will feature 24 of his paintings, many of which carry deep emotional themes. Nitin describes his work as “emotive” and “authentic,” with a focus on themes of innocence, courage, and healing. The presence of a recurring figure in his work—a boy—has become symbolic, representing both personal growth and vulnerability.

While Nitin continues to be active in the world of acting, he is increasingly dedicating himself to painting. The idea of pursuing art full-time is now a reality for him, and he expresses gratitude that his childhood dream is finally coming true. “It’s a dream come true,” he reflects. “I’ve always wanted to be an artist, and now I’m doing it. It’s so fulfilling to see people buy my work and connect with it on such an emotional level.”

The themes of nature and healing also play a significant role in Nitin’s life. A self-proclaimed “tree hugger,” he finds peace in nature and uses it as inspiration for his artwork. “Putting your bare feet on grass and getting fresh air—it’s therapeutic,” he says. While he once might have kept these practices to himself, he now embraces them as an integral part of his wellbeing and creative process.

As Nitin continues to build his art career, he encourages others to pursue their dreams, no matter how long it may take. “We live in difficult times, and sometimes it feels impossible to follow our passions. But it’s important to take that leap,” he advises. For Nitin Ganatra, the journey from EastEnders star to respected artist is a testament to resilience, self-discovery, and the power of following one’s dreams. His story serves as an inspiration for anyone looking to reclaim their passion, no matter how far off course they may have strayed.
