General Hospital writers tease Port Charles’ “unstable” future in 2025 as Kingpin Sonny exits, leaving the entire Mafia “leaderless.” How chaotic will things get?

2024 saw significant changes behind the scenes at General Hospital, and as the soap opera moves into 2025,

new co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten are at the helm, guiding the show into a fresh era.

The duo, who took over after the departure of Chris Van Etten and Dan O’Connor,

have brought their years of experience to Port Charles, collaborating closely to shape the future of the iconic show.

Korte, who has been a part of General Hospital for over three decades, describes her new role as co-head writer as both an honor and a challenge.

“It’s daunting at times, but I am loving it,” she shared.

Korte’s long history with the show, she explains, gives her a unique understanding of the characters, their voices, and the importance of honoring the complex history that General Hospital fans have invested in over the years. This deep connection to the show allows her to craft storylines that respect the past while pushing the characters forward into new and exciting directions.

Van Etten, returning to the show after a previous stint, echoes Korte’s sentiments, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to write for a show he has loved for many years. “Writing for General Hospital is a dream twice come true,” Van Etten shared. His enthusiasm is palpable as he reflects on his return to Port Charles, noting how thankful he is for the trust placed in him by executive producer Frank Valentini, the show’s cast, and the production team. Van Etten also praised Korte’s steady hand and boundless creativity, calling her an ideal collaborator.

The partnership between Korte and Van Etten is a true collaboration, built on trust, mutual respect, and a shared love for the soap genre. Korte explains their working style as one where no idea is off-limits, even the outlandish ones. “Sometimes the most ludicrous ideas turn out to be the most exciting ones,” she said. Their creative process is dynamic, with one of them often tossing out an idea that the other helps to develop and expand. A prime example of this collaborative effort was in crafting Kristina’s fall, which Korte and Van Etten were able to develop into a storyline with wide-reaching consequences for multiple characters.

When asked to describe the Port Charles they’re writing, both writers agree on one key term: “volatile and sexy.” This implies a year ahead filled with passion, conflict, and high stakes—ingredients that have always defined the heart of General Hospital.

Looking back on 2024, Korte reflects on several major moments that defined the year for the show. Among the highlights were the returns of fan-favorite characters like Jason Morgan, Lucas Jones, Ric Lansing, Lucky Spencer, and Lulu Spencer, as well as the arrival of new faces such as Jack Brennan, Isaiah Gannon, and Gio Palmieri. Korte also mentioned some of the key plotlines, including Kristina’s fall and the emotional aftermath, Sam McCall’s tragic death, Willow and Drew’s affair, and the intense rivalry between Curtis Ashford and Drew. Additionally, the dramatic events at the Quartermaine mansion were a significant focal point for the year.

Van Etten adds his perspective, highlighting the emotional farewells of beloved characters like Bobbie Spencer, as well as the reunions of Lucky and Lulu with their families. He also notes Anna Devane finding her footing again, Finn’s spiral and redemption, and the growing dynamics within the Scorpio family. Notable moments included the love story of Robert Scorpio and Holly Sutton, and the development of the on-screen mother-daughter relationship between Lois Cerullo and Brook Lynn Ashton. All these storylines contributed to the rich, multifaceted drama that General Hospital is known for.

As General Hospital heads into 2025, fans can expect the same level of intrigue and passion that has defined the show for decades. Korte and Van Etten are committed to creating a balance between honoring the show’s legacy and taking bold, new steps forward. With the promise of more surprises, drama, and romance, Port Charles is set to remain a captivating place for viewers well into the new year.

In the words of the co-head writers, “Soap opera requires generating such a volume of story that we never stop riffing.” And with Korte and Van Etten at the helm, it’s clear that the creative spark at General Hospital will continue to burn brightly in 2025 and beyond.
