Upcoming scenes in Emmerdale will see Caleb Miligan (played by William Ash) make a startling discovery
that could completely upend his and Ruby Fox-Miligan’s (Beth Cordingly) life.
Ruby, who has been harboring a heartbreaking secret for over 30 years, is about to confront a truth that could change everything.
The secret involves her painful past, where she suffered sexual abuse at the hands of her father while growing up.
In recent episodes, Ruby confided in Chas Dingle (Lucy Pargeter) about a deep fear:
she suspects that her daughter, Steph Miligan (Georgia Jay), may not actually be Caleb’s biological child.
This possibility has left Ruby in turmoil, fearing that the revelation could destroy the family she has built with Caleb. Following Chas’ encouragement, Ruby decided to take a DNA test to determine whether Caleb is indeed Steph’s father.
As the day for the DNA results approaches, Ruby’s anxiety intensifies. Beth Cordingly, who plays Ruby, explained that her character is torn between wanting her greatest fear not to be true — that Caleb may not be Steph’s father. “She desperately wants reassurance so that she can move on,” Cordingly said. Ruby has feared this possibility since she first found out she was pregnant. Although she doesn’t want to face the truth, she has hoped against hope that the child is Caleb’s, doing everything she can to protect the family she loves.
When Ruby finally receives the test results, her anxiety reaches a peak. She nervously clutches the envelope, knowing that whatever is inside could change her life forever. In a tense moment, Ruby quickly stuffs the envelope into her bag as Caleb walks in on her. Her nerves are on edge as she prepares to face the truth, but before she can open the envelope, her daughter Steph interrupts, preventing her from reading the results.
Overwhelmed and unsure of what to do, Ruby turns once again to Chas for support. Chas reassures her that, regardless of the results, Caleb will love and accept Steph as his own, even if he is not her biological father. Ruby, however, decides that not knowing the truth might be easier than facing it. She ultimately chooses to destroy the results, hoping that the uncertainty will allow her to maintain the status quo and preserve her family’s happiness.
But Ruby’s decision is thwarted when Caleb, unaware of the emotional turmoil Ruby is experiencing, rummages through her bag looking for painkillers and accidentally discovers the envelope containing the test results. When Ruby returns home and finds Caleb holding the envelope, she is forced to confront the reality of the situation. Now, their marriage could be on the line.
Cordingly described Ruby’s reaction: “She feels like a deer caught in the headlights. Caleb is standing there, holding the results, and until he speaks, Ruby doesn’t even know what’s inside. It’s not just the shock of someone finding something they weren’t supposed to see — it’s the added bombshell that she doesn’t even know what the results are herself.”
