Sarah stared at her mother in disbelief. “So you’re telling me that you knew Jesse was a thief and you let him into our lives anyway? You trusted him with this?”

Gail nodded, though there was a weariness in her eyes that spoke of the weight she had been carrying. “It wasn’t an easy decision. But Jesse—he’s not just some random conman. He had connections, people who could help clean up the mess Damon left behind. I did what I thought was best to protect all of us.”

Sarah’s hands were trembling now, her mind reeling. She had come here ready to expose Jesse for the fraud he was, only to find out that her own mother had orchestrated the whole thing. “Mum, this is insane. You can’t seriously believe that letting Jesse steal from Damon’s stash is going to keep us safe.”

“I don’t expect you to understand,” Gail replied, her voice calm but laced with an underlying sadness. “But I did what I had to do. Damon’s money—it was cursed, Sarah. If it stayed hidden, it would only lead to more trouble. Jesse was the only one I could trust to get rid of it properly.”

Sarah’s head spun. She wanted to scream, to shake her mother and make her see how wrong this all was. But deep down, a part of her understood. Gail had always been fiercely protective of her family, sometimes making questionable decisions to keep them safe. This, though—this was on another level.

“You should’ve told me,” Sarah whispered, her voice breaking. “You should’ve trusted me.”

Gail’s eyes softened. “I’m sorry, love. I didn’t want to drag you into this. But now you know the truth.”
